Hi, I'm about to purchase a secondhand quad, but am confused with what to look for..I need one which will be fairly capable in sand dunes (as in not bogging down and getting stuck), but also be capable with trail rides we have in New Zealand, which range from sand through to farmland, hills and forestry with mud/streams thrown in.
I was thinking along the lines of a Honda Foreman 400/ Kodiak 400 etc, but then was wondering about a Yamaha Wolverine/ Blaster etc also...realise they are more race oriented..my biggest concern is a "Farm type" quad will be no fun in the sand dunes.
I ride pretty quietly, so top speed isn't a consideration for me.
I'm a big built bloke so was thinking 350cc as a minimum really with a 4 stroke, or are the 250/300cc 4 stroke quads ok?
Also whats the pros and cons of shaft drive versus chain?

I've had a few dirt bikes before, as in XR250/ Suzuki 250cc quad/ Honda 350 3 wheeler, but haven't ridden for a few years.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted, don't want to waste money on the wrong type of bike..:)

Many thanks for your ideas,
Mal.
