Title says it all.

I was just offloading my quad from the trailer to go on a trail with some buddies, everything was working fine, until I heard some clinging from the engine. I let it idle for about 5 minutes and it went away. We drove around the parking lot to see if it came back, it did. It got louder and I noticed I was loosing power. I was forcing the engine to stay on, but decided to let it stall. After the stall I started it up again, let it stall, then it wouldn't start. There was a massive backfire.

I tried starting it for 20 seconds, and there constant "puffs" coming from the exhaust. We towed it to the trailer and brought her home.

The clinging wasn't happening when I loaded it up and ripped around the night before. When we got home I changed out the spark plug, and it still will not start. I noticed the old sparkplug was black (burnt), and there was no oil. It was dried. My quad should tell me if the engine/tranny oil is low, but I could not tell what kind of oil it was for. My rancher has 1 cylinder.

I noticed it backfiring a few weeks before but wasn't concerned.

Any help is appreciated. I am worried I just killed my quad.

Thank you,

Travis.

Sorry to hear that sir, dont get me wrong but i think your quad engine had jsut seized as you mention there was no oil so that means no lubrication.:(

Well, I did some tests and took off the head. Turns out, the quad overheated. The Piston was pretty much black, and the clinging was the piston that melted off.

My old wheeler was a 4x4 rancher i have listened to it hit rev limiter in all the gears and total put it complete under water and it has even quiet on me like that i have still never seen the warning light come on so i would never trust warning lights i would always check the oil and stuff in them.

an instructor of mine once said, "warning lights are like barbie, they look nice but are not entirely functional."
