not charging

I have a phoenix 200. I can run it with a charged battery but when the charge runs out it stops. The quad will not run with battery removed while still running. Could it be the regulator or what might it be? It sat for a while when I put a new battery in I smelled a burning elect smell.

If your not charging I would blame your coil however you said that you smelt something burning which would lead me to believe that you may have had a short circuit that burned a wire off. Trace your wiring harness to check for wires that are burnt off. You might also wish to check your fuses.
