Hey everyone! I'm 15 and I just bought my first atv: an 03 Yamaha Beartracker. It needs some work, so I'll be asking plenty of questions along the way. However I'm pretty mechanically inclined, as I've been playing with small engines (go karts, minibikes, etc.) for a few years now.

You have to be a little bit more specific....what exactly do you mean? when you revv the throttle does it keep revving even though you let the throttle go?

It sounds like your problem is in the engine...did you check the spark plug? if you did and it's fine, then it's like I said "it's your engine".Your probably not getting any ignition in your engine. You need to get an (owners repair manual) it'll save you money & headaches. Here are some sites to where you get them (rockymountainatv.com,denniskirk and themotorbookstore).I hope this helps you out.

I'm trying to help you as best as I can.But if I can't hear the motor and see exactly whats going there's not much I can do.Are you having problems with the new motor that you bought or the old one? A little bit of advice, when people start messing around with the inside of a motor it seems to cause problems later on especially if you bought it off of the person who worked on it.Was this person qualified to work on this motor? cause sometimes you have people who mess with these motors and their really not mechanics or tech.I'm gonna ask someone else who's qualified about your problem and I'll back to you as soon as I can.

Well yfzgirl is taking the smarter approach in this situation i'm still curious if you got the three basics present on your bike. Do you have spark, fuel and compression? To see if you got spark take the spark plug out of the cylinder, put it in the boot and while holding onto the rubber boot ONLY put the electrode of the spark plug onto a metal piece of your bike and tap the start, or kick her once with the key on. If you see a spark then you know your plug and electronics is good up to this point. Make sure you only hold onto the rubber though because if you try this with your hand on any piece of metal on the spark plug you will get a small shock! Nothing serious, I have done it once or twice myself:D

To see if fuel is getting into the engine have your spark plug in the engine and have everything like you are getting ready to go out for a ride. Turn the engine over a for about 15-20 seconds. Take the spark plug back out. If it comes out dry then you arn't getting any fuel. If it's wet then you should be good.

Compression is a littler harder to test but very important none the less. You could go out and buy a compression tester for a reasonable price at a store like princess auto but if you are not experienced at working on engines this might be one you may wish to have done by an experienced tech.

Do the first two tests first and get back to us

....O yeah by the way, just a general note; if your not 100% sure what your doing never take apart a bike engine that still has a chance of working because chances are you will break it completely! Leave the hard stuff to people who know what they are doing!

Well put.Demon Rider's got a point try out what he said it might work.If you ask me I think somebody ducked him on that motor he bought, no disrespect! But that's what I think is happening here. The knowledge that I have comes from working with my husband on my racing quads for years. And when we get stumped we call on our mechanic for help sometimes, and that's if we no choice.Good Luck!

hey demon rider i checked the spark plug and after i took it back out it was pitch black but it felt like it was getting fuel but i think i should clen the carburator out to see if anything is going good through it. but im thinkind that the cdi box is going bad but right now it still wont start and i dont know what to do. plz get back at me and tell me now what to do after i did that

Well your plug will be black if your running rich, my question was, was the plug wet? Also all your CDI box does basically is step up the voltage from your battery to the point where there is enough voltage to jump the gap on the spark plug. If you do the put the spark plug in its boot and touch it off a metal part of the engine. Hit the start button for a few seconds to turn the engine over. Watch the spark plug as you do this. If you see a nice spark in the gap then you know your electronics is good. Therefore eliminating your CDI box as a cause of problems. If you don't see a spark then you could be right in thinking it is you CDI box. Do the tests and tell me if your plug is wet, and if you got a nice spark on your plug. I need this information to help you further.

Don't you think he should clean the spark plug first before doing anything? If it is black...try to clean it with 3M Dust Remover spray to blow the dirt & dust out of the spark plug. After you do that spray some W-D40 in a rag or heavy duty paper towel and wipe the spark plug down and that should clean up the blackness off of the spark plug and should be clean after that. Then you could do your spark plug test like Demon Rider explained it;) .

I can't believe i neglected to mention cleaning the spark plug! O well, do it and get back to us. If its in too bad of shape just go and replace it.
