Wow! You need to check everything on the wires because you may have a split in the negative or positive wire.Go over the wires again with a flashlight and feel the wires entirely and bend them back & forth making sure that their intact.I would check the solenoid to see if it is new any mechanic can tell you that for free just by testing it.The same thing is happening to me right now with my 250ex.I found out that the starter wire (the negative wire) split in half right off of the battery so I ordered a new one.It was making the same clicking sound when I would try to start it.

A quick way to check to see if there is a break in a wire is to do a "continuity" test on it. This is a feature on most multimeters. I have one that I only paid 20 bucks for that even has this feature. Basically you turn your selector switch to the continuity test position, put a test lead on either end of the wire and if there is no break in the wire (ie a solid connection) then the multimeter will make a solid "beep" sound as long as you keep the test probes touching either end of the wire.
Of course if you got a ground (which is what im guessing you have) it's going to be harder to find. You may still have continuity in the wire as there is no break in the wire but what has happend is that the insulation has worn off one of the wires and now the electricty is taking the easiest route to ground, ie the frame of your bike, so what your going to have to do is do as yfzgirl said and visually inspect every inch of wire and yeah rubbing it can help to cuz sometimes you will miss something small after spending a few hours just looking at the wires.....it gets tiring lol
